“Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks.” (Plutarch)
This is a poorly scanned version of a final project I did for my Literature of the Beat Generation class. It is a collage-style travel book of Part 1 of On The Road by Jack Kerouac. This was actually a really fun project to do, I haven’t collaged in a while and I used to do it a lot. I meant to do more but ran out of time because I procrastinated so much, but I am happy with the end result.
This is super rad
#life storyhave you ever stopped taking notice of a band for a while and then one day you decide to listen to them again and all your feelings cOME FLOODING BACK AND IT FEELS LLIKE TYOU’VE BEEN HIT BY A TRUCK OF EMOTIONS

Tonight my friends and I drove across the bay. I had never gone over the bay before, only under. It was late enough for the moon to be pretty high but early enough for the sky to be the most spectacular shade of blueish purple. It was foggy and we couldn’t see the land on either side. It was like driving over the ocean. It was like being on anther planet. Just us and the huge full moon hanging in the sky like some sparkling ripe fruit, and its reflection splashed enormous across the water. It was truly one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in a long long time.

Being from San Diego, I think people (myself included) expect that when I start to miss my home, it’s stuff like the beach and the weather and balboa park. And I do find myself missing that stuff sometimes. But mostly when I feel homesick, I’m missing the shitty weird stuff about the neighborhood where I grew up, like strip malls and my favorite coffee shops and random freeway off ramps that feel familiar because I would take them home or to work so often. I guess the things that make a place important to you are rarely the things that end up in the tourist pamphlets. No concierge is going to recommend the Einstein bagels down the street from my high school to someone looking for something cool to do in San Diego. The thing that makes those places matter to me is that I lived in them. And I guess in that sense it doesn’t matter how objectively average they are. Nostalgia is not always glamorous.
